Overall View

Each barrier is composed of a series of movable elements ("gate-ships") which, when closed, rest against "jamb" piers, and when in the open position are also attached to mooring piers. They rest and stabilize on the seabed using an open "skirt" with pressure chamber, and an air cushion. All this has complete regard for the continuous and unimpeeded pasage of shipping and the exchange of water between sea and lagoon. In relation to navigation, ships will pass through a channel 185 m wide for a distance of only 300 m.

The Project also includes a study concerning the "Petroleum Channel", which proposes intervention both for the re-establishment of hydrodynamic equilibrium and for the phenomenon of "acqua alta".
